Bogu (Protective Armor) Measurement Guide

Correct sizing is one of the most important factors when purchasing kendo armor (bogu). Properly sized equipment is the first step in your kendo practice. By sending us accurate measurements, we can deliver armor that fits you perfectly. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Preparation

Fabric measuring tape

Use a fabric sewing tape measure.
Rulers, string, or metal tapes may give inaccurate results.

Two people measuring together

Always measure with at least two people.
One person measures while the other holds still.

How to Measure for Men (Face Mask)

Three measurements — A, B, and C — are required when ordering a men. Close your mouth and hold your head straight before measuring.

A

Vertical circumference of the head

Measure from the top of the head (crown/tsumuji) around the chin and back.

  1. Place the tape at the crown of the head (have someone hold it there).
  2. Bring the tape down through the tip of the chin, past the front of the ear, and wrap it all the way around — measuring at cheek level.

※ Typical range: 58 cm (child) – 72 cm (adult).
73 cm or above may have limited product availability — please consult us.

⚠️ Incorrect example: Do not let the tape slip off the crown or ride too high/low.
Incorrect A measurement
B

Horizontal circumference of the head

Think of where a hachimaki (headband) sits — slightly above the ears, across the forehead, and around the back of the head.

※ Typical value: around 57 cm for adult men.
Reference check: A − B ≈ 10 cm ± 1 cm for most people.

Measuring point B on the head
C

Face height (forehead to chin)

Rest your chin flat on a table, keeping your head straight. Measure the vertical distance from the table surface to the outer corner of your eye. Using a ruler gives the most accurate result.

※ Typical value: around 12.5 cm for adult men.

📋 Example model (female, 168 cm, average build):
A: 65.5 cm  |  B: 55 cm  |  C: 10.8 cm

Measuring point C — face height

⚠️ Important Notes for Men Measurement

  • The tape should be snug — not too tight, not too loose.
  • Keep the tape flat against your face and head with no gaps.
  • Double-check that the tape follows the correct path before reading the measurement.
👶 For Growing Children If you would like to purchase a size larger to accommodate growth, we recommend adding a men cushion (面クッション). The cushion fits inside the men to adjust fit, and also absorbs impact — ideal for children who find strikes to the men painful. If you plan to use a cushion, please note this in the order comments.

How to Measure for Kote (Gloves)

Two measurements — D and E — are required when ordering kote. Extend your fingers straight and together, and relax your hand completely before measuring.

D

Finger length (fingertip to first knuckle)

Measure the straight-line distance from the tip of the middle finger to the crease at the base of the fingers (the first set of knuckles on the palm side).

Measuring kote point D
E

Palm circumference

Wrap the tape around the palm starting from between the base of the thumb and index finger, going all the way around the widest part of the palm, and back to the starting point.

Do (Chest Protector) & Tare (Hip Protector)

For do and tare, no measurement from you is needed.
We will determine the correct size based on your height, weight, and waist size.

Please provide these three values when placing your order, and we will select the best fit for you.

How to Choose the Right Size for Kendo Gi and Hakama

Point!

Measuring the sleeve length will give you the perfect size!

Recommended height is a guideline. By measuring properly, you can select an even more suitable size!

How to Measure Sleeve Length

Measure from the back of your neck → around your shoulder → past your elbow → to your wrist. (It's easier with 2 people if possible)

① Position hand at back of neck

② Measure around shoulder to elbow

③ Continue to wrist (around thumb base)

④ Make sure arm is slightly bent

Compare your measurement to the sleeve length in the chart above and select your size based on your physique and preference.

If you're between 2 sizes: Smaller people should choose the smaller size.

Example: If your sleeve measurement is 65cm, you could choose size 3 (sleeve 63cm), 3L (sleeve 66cm) → Size 3L would be recommended
Point!

Measuring from waist to hem will give you the perfect hakama size!

Recommended height is a guideline. By measuring below the navel, you can select an even more suitable size!

How to Measure Hakama Length

For Men & Children

Stand naturally and measure from just below the navel to the top of the anklebone. Select the hakama size where this measurement matches "waist to hem" in the chart.

For Women

Stand naturally with feet shoulder-width apart and measure from below the navel to the top of the anklebone. For women, the measurement should reach just above the anklebone.

Compare your measurement to the hakama chart above and select your size based on your physique and preference.

If you're between 2 sizes: Smaller people should choose the smaller size.

Example: If your actual measurement is 93cm, you could choose size 24 (91cm) or size 25 (95cm) → Size 24 would be recommended
👶
For Growing Children:

We recommend choosing one size larger than the measurements indicate, as hakama are typically worn slightly shorter.
